Let’s be Honest, our environment is getting worse each day, right? I think in past few years, words like, global warming, climate change, water scarcity, air pollution, water pollution, etc, has become a part of our daily language.

So much so, that we have become more conscious about how we can help save the environment, By replacing plastic bags with reusable bags. By trying not to waste so much food. And, by saving electricity and water as much possible.

But, Hang on. What About Clothes We Wear?

Is there a connection between the clothes we wear and the environment?

Actually There’s huge connection between them,

You know what? The sweater that is placed in your closet or if you are wearing one. Might just take about 300 years to get fully decomposed in the soil. Yes, you read it right. And this is just an tip of the ice-berg.

It takes about 2700 liters of water to make just 1 cotton t-shirt, Basically, this is the amount of water that a person can drink in 2.5 years. That’s a huge number right? And every year 2,000,000,000 cotton t-shirts are sold worldwide. And rest you can do the math 2700 x 1,000,000,000= 2,700,000,000,000.

Also almost, 100 billion garments are purchased every year in the world. And the chances are only that piece of clothing will be worn only 7 times before being tossed out. And almost 93% will end up in landfills.

And since our clothes are made up of synthetic fibers, 60% to be exact are not biodegradable. Not only synthetic fibers are the big problems but

Where The Raw Materials Are Being Sourced And How The Clothes Are Manufactured?

All this contributes a lot to the pollution levels. During the manufacturing of clothes, a lot of chemicals and synthetic dyes are used to give them a polished look, And you know what? every year almost 50,000, tons of dye are discharged into global water systems from textile industries.

So, It’s not surprising that the clothing and textiles industries are 2nd most polluting industries in the world after oils and gas.

The UN says the fashion industry is responsible for 10% of global greenhouse emission, annually.

It’s not like we can stop wearing clothes.

WHERE IS WHY SUSTAINABLE FASHION MATTERS

And by sustainable fashion means that those clothes which are not made up of synthetic fibers nylon, polyester, or acrylic, But are made up of eco-friendly fibers, which can entirely be from natural resources like, Wood pulp, hemp, jute, coconut, bananas, and pineapple as well.

Or can be a mix of natural synthetic fibers that put less strain on the environment and actually can decompose in a shorter span of the time. and in fact, many major brands are actually moving towards sustainable fashion, Because we people are getting more environmentally conscious.

What Fashion Brands Are Doing?

So why not only brands like Levi’s and Esprit global Daisy but many retail chains have also started their own collections made out of sustainable fibers, among many makers of sustainable fibers, an Austrian company produces a certain variety which is called eco wear and is made out of wood pulp this fiber can actually put 50 percent less strain on the environment and can decompose fully within a few months.

I know that most of the clothes which many brands have right now are not made out of sustainable fibres but that’s how our economy works right it’s about demand and supply they also have to maintain their financial viability and while many brands are slowly moving toward sustainable fashion maybe we as consumers can demand more eco-friendly clothing and who knows if we all collectively ask for sustainable clothes maybe in the near future all brands might just succumb to our demand they might just get motivated to look at sustainable fashion as the norm rather than an exception wouldn’t that be nice till then if you’re out shopping and you want some good clothes and also want to save the environment but a pair of naps a push leaner keep tank.
